You get $100. So do I.
Starlink pays both of us, as cash or service credit, when you order through my referral link and stay two months. Same price either way.
Look for the green $100 banner on Starlink's page, then finish your order in that same tab. How the $100 works
A home Starlink plan can't be used on a moving boat; Starlink's Help Center says in-motion use isn't permitted on any Residential plan. On the water you need Roam, which covers inland waterways, marinas and territorial waters. Roam started at $55 a month on starlink.com on 24 October 2026.
I should say up front: I don't run Starlink on a boat. Mine is a Residential plan on my roof in Chesapeake Beach. Everything below comes from Starlink's own pages, linked as I go.
Why your home plan won't do
Starlink's Help Center is blunt about it: in-motion use is not permitted on any Residential plan, per its Fair Use Policy. Residential service is also meant for the service address registered on your account, and doesn't roam. Pausing with Standby Mode isn't meant for in-motion use either.
The plans that do work on the water
| Plan | From (starlink.com, 24 Oct 2026) | What Starlink lists |
|---|---|---|
| Roam 100GB | $55/mo | Up to 300+ Mbps for about a week of typical use, then unlimited low-speed data. |
| Roam 300GB | $80/mo | Up to 300+ Mbps, then unlimited low-speed data. Aimed at regular travelers. |
| Roam Unlimited | $175/mo | Unlimited high-speed data; international use; can add Ocean Mode. |
Sources: Starlink's Roam page and the Help Center article "What are the Roam service plans?". All Roam plans include in-motion use, countrywide coverage including inland waterways and marinas, Standby Mode, and a 30-day trial. Speeds are maximums, not guarantees, and slow down when the network is busy.
On the 100GB and 300GB plans, once you use up the allowance, Starlink drops you to low-speed data: fine for email, calls and texts; not for streaming, big downloads or video calls.
How far out you can go
Starlink says Roam covers inland waterways and territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles from shore. Past that, Roam Unlimited users can opt in to paid Ocean Mode. As I read Starlink's terms, ordinary Bay cruising sits inside Roam's coverage, but check Starlink's own coverage information for your route before you count on it, especially if you head out past the Capes.
Which dish to put on a boat
Starlink lists these as supported for in-motion use: Starlink Performance (Gen 3 and Gen 2), Standard 4, Standard 4 X and Starlink Mini. It says actuated dishes with motors, such as the Standard Actuated, aren't recommended while moving, and that improper installation or use may cause injury, property damage, or void the warranty if the equipment is damaged in motion.
What I'd do
Keep the home plan for the house. If the boat is the question, look at Roam as its own line, starting with 100GB if you're only out on weekends, and use the 30-day trial to see how it does on your usual water. If you're also deciding about the house, my Starlink cost page covers the Residential plans.
Common questions
What people ask me about this
Can I use my home Starlink on my boat?
Not underway. Starlink's Help Center says in-motion use is not permitted on any Residential plan, per its Fair Use Policy, and Residential service is meant for the registered service address. For a boat you need a plan that supports in-motion use, such as Roam.
Which Starlink plan works on a boat on the Chesapeake Bay?
Starlink's Roam plans support in-motion use on inland waterways and territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles from shore, and include coverage of marinas. On starlink.com in October 2026, Roam 100GB started at $55 a month, Roam 300GB at $80 and Roam Unlimited at $175.
Is there a Starlink promo code or discount?
There is no Starlink coupon code — Starlink does not issue them, and any site advertising one is guessing. The only standing discount is the referral program: order through someone's referral link and you and the person who referred you each get $100 in the US, as cash or service credit. There is no code to type at checkout; the link does it, and Starlink shows a green banner confirming the $100 when the page opens. Mine is https://starlink.com?referral=RC-586189-74623-26 — the price is identical either way. You pay your first month as normal, and the $100 is issued once you have been subscribed for two months.
Which Starlink dishes can be used while a boat is moving?
Starlink lists Starlink Performance (Gen 3 and Gen 2), Standard 4, Standard 4 X and Starlink Mini as supported for in-motion use. It says actuated models with motors, such as Standard Actuated, are not recommended in motion and may void the warranty if damaged while moving.
Do you use Starlink on a boat?
No. Mine is a Residential plan on my roof in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. Everything here about boats comes from Starlink's own Roam page and Help Center, read on 24 October 2026.
Ordering Starlink?
Check plans for your address or your boat on Starlink's site. Ordering through my link gets you $100, as cash or service credit, on eligible plans including Roam — and I get the same.
Look for the green $100 banner when Starlink's page opens — that confirms the code took. You pay month one as normal; the $100 is issued once you have been subscribed for two months. Finish your order in the same tab — the referral can be lost if you close it and come back later. Here's the full timeline.
