To fix a Starlink obstruction, scan with the app's Check for Obstructions tool, move the dish to a clear spot, then unplug and reboot. If you can't move it, clear the obstruction or raise the dish above it. That's Starlink's own Help Center advice, checked 15 October 2026.

What an obstruction is

Starlink's satellites move across the sky, so the dish needs a clear view of a wide patch of it, not just one direction. Starlink's Help Center names the usual culprits: a tree branch, a pole or a roof sitting between the dish and the satellites. Anything in that field of view can cause service interruptions.

How to check (before you buy, and after)

  1. Stand where you'd mount the dish.
  2. In the Starlink app (iOS or Android), choose Check for Obstructions.
  3. Scan the sky with your phone's camera, holding it as close as you can to the dish's height and angle.
  4. Repeat in other spots and compare.

The tool shows what's in the dish's field of view and an estimate of what to expect for different activities. Starlink recommends running it before you order if your property is heavily obstructed. Source: "How to check for obstructions".

How to fix it

Starlink's "How to fix obstructions" article gives three options, in this order:

Starlink also says plainly: if you can't install the kit or clear obstructions safely, don't, and get professional help.

Why you suddenly get an obstruction alert

If you've been fine for months and an alert appears, Starlink lists the common causes: new branches or leaves (especially in spring, when trees fill back in), debris such as leaves or soil on the dish, and snow buildup after a blizzard. The alert can also fade on its own as the dish learns its surroundings.

If the app shows "Obstructed" with frequent interruptions, Starlink says obstructions have recently hurt performance. That's more common right after you clear the obstruction map, while the dish relearns. Less often it means something has built up on the dish, or the dish has fallen over.

What I did

I installed mine myself on my own roof in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, and found it easy. A roof mount is one of the "go higher" options above. On this peninsula, trees are the usual problem; I write about that on my Calvert County page, and about choosing a mounting spot on my setup page.

Not yet measuredI haven't recorded my own obstruction percentage from the app yet, so I won't quote one. When I do, it goes here with the date.

Common questions

What people ask me about this

How do I fix a Starlink obstruction?

Starlink's Help Center says the simplest fix is to use the Check for Obstructions tool in the Starlink app to find a spot on your property with no obstructions, move the dish there, then unplug and reboot it. The other options are clearing the obstruction, such as removing a branch, or raising the dish above it with a mount, pole or tower.

How do I check for Starlink obstructions before I buy?

Open the Starlink app at the spot where you'd mount the dish, choose Check for Obstructions, and scan the sky with your phone's camera, held as close as possible to the dish's height and position. Starlink recommends doing this before ordering if your property is heavily obstructed.

Why did I suddenly get an obstruction alert?

According to Starlink, common new obstructions are new branches or leaves, especially in spring, debris such as leaves or soil on the dish, and snow buildup after a blizzard. The alert may also clear on its own as Starlink learns its surroundings.

Is there a Starlink promo code or discount?

There is no Starlink coupon code — Starlink does not issue them, and any site advertising one is guessing. The only standing discount is the referral program: order through someone's referral link and you and the person who referred you each get $100 in the US, as cash or service credit. There is no code to type at checkout; the link does it, and Starlink shows a green banner confirming the $100 when the page opens. Mine is https://starlink.com?referral=RC-586189-74623-26 — the price is identical either way. You pay your first month as normal, and the $100 is issued once you have been subscribed for two months.

What does "Obstructed" mean in the Starlink app?

Starlink says the app shows it when obstructions have recently had a significant impact on performance. It can be more common right after you clear the obstruction map, while the dish relearns its surroundings. Less often, it means debris on the dish or that the dish has fallen over.
